When I drafted my tiny house plans, I was focused on ways to make the space look and feel bigger. With my teenagers about to fly the coop, I didn’t need much space, but I still didn’t want it to feel cramped. Here are a few things I incorporated into my tiny house to make my 34×10 tiny house feel lighter, brighter and bigger.

1. Maximize windows

I actually bought the shell of my home already built from a guy on Craigslist. Read the whole story to find out why I definitely wouldn’t recommend buying a tiny house off of Craigslist! Nevertheless, I bought it. The thing that really made me want it was not only the 10′ width, which felt so spacious compared to 8′ models I had toured, but also the enormous amount of natural light that flooded the space. Between sun up and sundown, I really don’t turn a light on in any room!
My home’s natural light floods in from:
13 windows,
4 skylights, &
french doors with full length window panes.
2. Reflect light with mirrors

Not only do mirrors give the illusion of more space, they also reflect light, which is key in a tiny space. My living area is tucked under my daughter’s loft, but the full length mirror I added makes it feel brighter, which makes it feel bigger. In addition, I had my builder add a mirror to my loft closer door and hung a large round mirror in my daughter’s loft so that we both have an extra place to get ready of someone has taken over the bathroom.
My bathroom mirrored medicine cabinet not only reflects light, but it also holds a ton of things. My Kohler one was sold out, but here are some others that I found:
3. High ceilings

My tiny house has a single sloping shed style roof which means that it’s slightly angled and has a higher side, with the highest spot being around 14′. Combine that height with the largest part of the home (the kitchen) and the natural light flooding in from the windows, and the space feels enormous.
4. Less Stuff

While I do have plenty of space in my tiny house for stuff, I generally feel happier in the space when I take items out of it. And less physical clutter usually leads to less mental clutter, so my space feels peaceful and relaxing.
If decluttering seems overwhelming, I highly recommend reading Peter Walsh’s book ‘Let It Go’. It especially helped me with letting go of sentimental things. #ad
