My tiny house was delivered in January of 2021, so I had to figure out winter before pretty much anything else. My thought going into tiny living was… it shouldn’t take much to keep this little house toasty. And I was right… after I figured out a few things! Here are my 5 must-haves for staying warm in a tiny house.

1. Mini-Split Heating/Cooling Unit

This one is a no-brainer and pretty common in tiny houses. I love my Bryant Mini-Split. It has a remote and is super easy to switch between cooling and heating, fan speed and even direction or oscillating! I keep it pointed down into the kitchen. I keep it at around 64ºF in the winter and maybe 74ºF in the summer. I’m in northern Colorado so in the fall I often can go days with this thing totally off and just regulate the temp opening/closing windows and using my ceiling fan, noted at the bottom of this post.
PRO TIP:
I keep the mini-split remote by my bed so I can crank up the heat a couple notches before I crawl out of my warm covers in the morning!
2. Space Heaters

Unless it’s brutally cold out, I don’t like to keep the mini-split going all day. It heats up pretty fast with all of the natural light in my home, so most days I rely on a small space heater in my bathroom and one under my work space to keep my feet warm. I don’t know about you, but if my feet are cold, my whole body is cold! The one in my bathroom really gets things toasty fast so I often turn it on while I’m running a bath just to take the chill off, and then turn it off once I step into the bath.
I love these because they instantly heat the immediate space I’m in without wasting energy trying to heat the entire space.

PRO TIP:
The Lasko space heater under my work space actually has an on/off button on top of the heater, so I can easily turn it on or off with my foot. Because I work from home and am at my work space all day, this little heater really is a work horse for me! #ad

3. Electric Blankets

I don’t know about you, but I really don’t sleep well with the heat blasting in my house. It makes everything so dry, creates static, not to mention it really irritates my asthma. So I keep my heat below 65ºF even in the dead of winter but I stay super warm and cozy under my electric heated blanket. I just got this Biddeford one and I am in LOVE. I crank it to about 4 before I get in, and keep it around 2-3 throughout the night to stay warm without overheating. #ad

4. Electric Fireplace

I wouldn’t say an electric fireplace is essential if you don’t have the budget or space for it. But I had the space for it and it was on my luxury must-have list! I’ve always loved having a fireplace. The fan kicks out instant heat and does a good job heating up my living room area pretty quick. I love that it has a remote so I can turn it on and off without ever leaving the cozy sofa. #ad

5. A Reversible Ceiling Fan

The ceiling fan is the most essential part of regulating the temperature in a tiny house. The first few nights I spent in my house, I was so toasy in the loft that I was sweating. But when I came downstairs it was like walking into a freezer. After a little research, I realized I could reverse my ceiling fan during the winter to help push the heat down.
PRO TIP: Mine didn’t come with a remote which means I have to physically climb up on the countertop and hang onto the edge of the cabinet and lean out to flip the switch to reverse the direction. I found it scary the first time I did it but now I’m used to it. If you can find one with a remote that also changes direction, that would be ideal!

This post was all about my must-haves for staying warm in a tiny house. I hope you find some of these helpful. I know they keep me toasty!
